(UPDATE) Classes at all levels in private and public schools in Metro Manila were ordered suspended Friday, education officials said.

Education Undersecretary Fe Hidalgo earlier announced in a television interview the suspension of elementary and high school classes in private and public schools in the National Capital Region on Friday.

The Commission on Higher Education (CHEd) later announced that it was also suspending classes in the collegiate level, GMA Network's dzBB radio reported.

Asked the reason for the suspension, Hidalgo cited the commemoration of the anniversary of the 1986 EDSA People Power revolt and "security reasons."

Her announcement came after Army chief Lieutenant General Hermogenes Esperon claimed to have thwarted a coup plot that he said was to have taken place Friday.

The College of Computer Studies of De La Salle University-Manila will be hosting a conference entitled Emerging Technologies for Philippines 2020: Building Tomorrow’s Technology Today (www.dlsu.edu.ph/conferences/etfp) at the New World Renaissance Hotel on March 2 to 3, 2006. The two-day conference aims to highlight the current state of Information and Communications Technology in the country today, and stress on its relevance to national development, promote awareness of (current) local research activities in key areas, and encourage research collaboration between industry, academe, government and private institutions. These areas of interest are E-Governance, E-Learning, Knowledge Management and Game Development.

…YOUR RIGHTS.

1. Right to ORGANIZE

· We have the right to form, assist, or join any campus organization, alliance, or federation for our physical, intellectual, moral, civic, spiritual and/or political interest as long as it doesn’t go against the University’s mission.

· The University has to make sure that the democratic and autonomous existence of YOUR Student Council remains firm.

2. Right to PARTICIPATE in POLICY-MAKING

· You have the right of being represented in policy-making through the Student Council.

· The Student Council represents you in bodies such as the Multi-Sectoral Committee on Budget (MSCB), which is primarily concerned with your tuition/school fees and the Canteen Committee, which makes sure that your cafeteria food is adequate, clean and reasonably priced.

· Examples of other committees are listed in the Student Handbook.

· Your SC can meet with the Chairperson of the Board of Trustees every trimester to discuss pertinent university issues. The Board of Trustees is the highest policy-making body in the University.

· You, through the SC and other professional organizations have the right to participate in the screening of incoming teachers/professors.

3. Right to FREEDOM of _EXPRESSION and OPINION

· You have the right:

a. to free responsible _expression;

b. state your concerns regarding the quality of education you receive;

c. to dress according to your individual tastes (but within the context of the dress code!) and to air out your opinions regarding the dress code through your Student Council;

d. to file a grievance against any member of the academic community (following the guidelines stated in the Student Handbook Section 14);

e. to free press, according to Republic Act 7079.

4. Academic Rights

· You cannot be barred from taking an examination because of unpaid balances of tuition and other school fees.

· You have the right to drop subjects.

· You have the right to be given recognition through trimestral honors (e.g. Dean’s List) and graduation honors (e.g. Student Leadership Award, Summa Cum Laude).

· You have the right to know how you will be graded in your subjects.

· You have the right to be informed about your class standing not later than two weeks after your midterms exam. You also have the right to see your graded schoolwork which will have bearing on your grades before finals.

· You have the right to consult your professors.

· You have the right to see your corrected final examination papers and the computation of your final grades during course card day.

· You have the right to give your opinion regarding the curriculum of your department.

5. Right to AFFORDABLE EDUCATION

· You have the right to avail of scholarship through different bodies such as the Scholarship Financial Assistance Office (SFA).

· You have the right to a refund if you withdraw or even drop some subjects.

6. Right to INFORMATION

· You have the right to know your tuition, special fees and deadlines for payments prior to and during the enrollment period.

· You have the right to know about the standing of your absences.

· You have the right to be informed about your teacher/professor’s policies for finals and criteria for exemptions.

· You have the right to know your finals schedule two weeks prior to the start of finals week.

7. Right to DUE PROCESS in DISCIPLINARY PROCEEDINGS

· If you are subjected under a discipline case, you shall have the right to defend yourself and make your side be heard. You can even bring a counsel (e.g. a lawyer) with you.

· You cannot be blacklisted, expelled, suspended unless a set of criteria has been observed (see your handbook, c.37).

· Your discipline sanction must be proportionate to the seriousness of your offense.

· You cannot be subjected to any form of unreasonable search or seizure except for some instances (see your handbook, c.38).

8. Other Rights

· You have the right to access your own school records (e.g. transcript of records, grades, diplomas, etc.)

· You cannot contribute in any way (cash/kind) involuntarily except if you’re part of an org and it is required of you to do so.

· You have the right to adequate and safe school facilities.

· Military detachments cannot be installed in your campus

· You have the right to petition to have your grade/s changed if it is justifiable.

The ‘A’ in the AEIOU program of CATCH 2T8 stands for AWARENESS.

Palace: Monday a non-working day in Metro Manila

(UPDATE) MONDAY, July 25, is a special non-working day in Metro Manila, Malacañang announced Friday.

The declaration, contained in Proclamation 880 that Executive Secretary Eduardo Ermita signed "is encouraging and giving opportunities to Filipinos to listen to the address of the President [Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo] and be involved in the affairs of the country."

The proclamation however "does not cover employees of government departments, offices, agencies and instrumentalities providing police, security, fire protection, custodial, rescue, emergency, medical, and other similar services."

The Department of Labor will issue the guidelines for the proclamation.

Ms Arroyo will deliver her State of the Nation Address at 4 p.m. during a joint session of Congress at the Batasang Pambansa Complex in Quezon City amid organized protests by groups who want her out of Malacañang.

PAASCU awards CS program Level III status

The Philippine Accrediting Association of Schools, Colleges, and Universities (PAASCU) recently awarded the Computer Science program of the College of Computer Studies (CCS) Level III status. The course is the first Computer Science (CS) program in the country to receive the accreditation -- the highest to date for CS programs.

As certified by the Federation of Accrediting Agencies of the Philippines, the Computer Science program satisfactorily met the standards and fulfilled all the requirements of the PAASCU for Level III status. The said certification is valid until May 2009.

With its Level III accreditation status, the College is entitled to full administrative and financial deregulation and curricular autonomy. Other benefits include priority in government subsidy for faculty development and in terms of available funding assistance for scholarships, library materials, laboratory equipment,and other development activities.

The CCS applied for the Level III status in July 2004. They submitted documentary evidence showing the College’s high standard of instruction as manifested by the quality of its teachers; extent of faculty and staff involvement in the school’s community extension programs; research activities; strong staff development tradition; and working consortia or linkages with other schools.

The College’s CS program is also the first Computer Science program that was given a PAASCU accreditation. It first earned its Level I and Level II accreditations in 1989 and 1993, respectively.

PAASCU is a private organization that accredits academic programs which meet commonly accepted standards of quality education. It was founded on December 2, 1957 and was officially recognized in November 1967 by the Bureau of Education and Culture (now the Department of Education) as an accrediting agency.

The criteria set by PAASCU are intended to serve as a guide for institutions as they strive for excellence and for accreditors as they assess institutional achievement. The standards reflect a realistic appraisal of the school’s resources and their efficient utilization to help the institution achieve its goals.

In order to address the issue of the flooding of email accounts, the CATCH 2T8 Batch Assembly has created a blogsite and a forum for CATCH 2T8. The address of the blogsite is http://catch2t8.blogspot.com. The link to the forum can be found in the blogsite previously mentioned.

Announcements and advertisements regarding activities will be posted in "CATCH UP with CATCH 2T8," the batch blogsite. This will make it easier for you to check out the activities of the CATCH 2T8 BA, as well as those happening in the different parts of the university, since you wont have to sort through the tons of email you receive everyday. The CATCH 2T8 BA will only be sending announcements to the yahoogroup if there is a need to do so.

Similarly, "The CATCH 2T8 HUDDLE," the forum, was created in order to decrease the number of emails sent to all of us through the yahoogroup which may not be relevant to most but may be relevant to a certain group of people, such as a specific specialization. The forum was designed to contain categories and sub-categories that can cater to more specific needs. These include Announcements, Raves and Rants, Specialization Corner and other categories designed to cater to your needs. The different committees and the specialization reps will gladly answer any question addressed to them related to their job.
